Article 27 Probationary Employee and Period

​Master Agreement Between the Government of the Province of Alberta and the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees​​

27.01

A person appointed to a position pursuant to the Public Service Act shall serve a probationary period.​ ​

27.02

An Employee who has previously been employed by the Employer may, at the discretion of the Employer, have such previous employment considered as part of the probationary period as specified for the classification.​ ​

27.03

(a)

​The period of probation shall start on the date of commencement and shall be six (6) or twelve (12) months as stipulated for classifications by the subsidiary agreements.

(b)

The period of probation may be extended by written agreement of the Union and the Employer.

(c)

Notwithstanding 27.03(b), an Employee who is absent for a period of paid or unpaid leave exceeding twenty (20) consecutive Work Days during the probationary period may, at the discretion of the Employer, have the probation period extended by an equivalent period to the length of that leave.

(d)

An Employee shall be notified in writing of any extension of the probation period prior to the expiry of the probation period. Such notification shall include the reasons for the extension.

(e)

This Article will also apply to Employees appointed to a Temporary Position.

27.04

The probationary period for an Apprentice shall be twelve (12) months.​ ​

27.05

On commencement of employment, a new Employee shall be provided with a copy of the Employee’s position description or list of duties.​​ ​
